After upgrading from kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 suddenly my wifi connection is very slow. Ping times are varying from 200 up to 1500 ms to www.google.nl.

When I connect my ethernet cable they drop to normal times like 8 or 9 ms. Anyone experiencing the same problem or know a solution I can try? During the upgrade process a few times they asked whether I wanted to keep or replace some kind of configuration file. I'm not sure anymore which file it was, but maybe this has something to do with it. Before the upgrade both wired and wireless connection worked perfect.

  • It is safe to run it was written by me and some good friends it will help diagnose your wireless issue. Paste this command in a terminal wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script It will download a script and create a file named (wireless-info.txt, or wireless-info.txt.tar.gz) in your home folder paste the contents of the file here pastebin.com then paste the link back here. No internet then go to this link for running the script without internet. ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12350385

Do:

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv iwldvm
sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Go into network manager and change your wireless settings to match the screenshots.

wireless settingswireless settings

Go into your router and change 802.11bgn to 802.11bg then save the settings and reboot router and computer.

Lets modify this file: sudo /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf change

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

To:

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0

  • Well, that seems to solve the problem for a moment. Now it works sometimes, but sometimes it's still very slow even to the point where there is no connection at all.

  • Some drivers have problems with N speeds and the commands disable N speed and allow the driver to operate much faster and more reliable.

  • Please read my edit in first reply, it is working better now. But still not optimal.

  • Make sure your wired connection is unplugged then test your wireless. Wired connection always overrides wireless, and I believe your wired connection will be slow because it is using the wrong driver.

  • I have my wired connection unplugged during testing. Speed becomes very slow, ping times are varying from 8 ms up to 500 ms. This is an improvement, because before the alterations you gave me, there were none normal ping times (8-10 ms). But it's still not very workable.

I had the same problem when I updated to 14.04. I tried everything also answers from this post. After a while I thought that I will give a try to LM, it turn out that problem disappeared and the magic is in linux-firmware package. LM uses the old version which is 1.127 whereas Ubuntu uses now 1.127.7. The easiest way to restore it to this version is: install Synaptic, find this package, click on it to mark it, press Ctrl+E and change its version. Apply changes and problem solved.

I solved this issue by downgrading my kernel version.

This answer is incomplete at best. You downgraded your kernel to what version and how? Answers should be as complete as possible to insure that even those unfamiliar with the process can follow your steps and succeed. Thank you.
