As you can see from the above information, lshw can detech 8GB RAM on my system, but the OS cannot. Its a 64bit system. I have tried running a live CD , no luck. I have also installed the latest kernel, did upgrade-grub and have checked the /etc/default/grub config file. No issues there.

I have upgraded the BIOS as well.

Can anyone help resolve this issue?

  • Raring uses by default a 3.8 kernel. Is there any specific reason to use a 3.2 kernel? Also it is some tweaked/manual build version?

  • So if you start your system with a 3.8 kernel you still have problems (you can install it using sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.8.0-27-generic for example)? Unless you really need the 3.2 kernel, it should be better to use a more recent kernel (in my Raring system I can't even find any 3.2 kernel in the repos...)

It can be that (some DDR-)-RAM is newer than your BIOS of your machine. This means that BIOS is not recognizing your RAM correctly - so this RAM than stays "invisible" for Linux. A BIOS-update could help.

And overseen something : It can be, that your mainboard does not allow more than 8 Gibi ?! So additional 4 Gibi would not work. Ask the producer of your mainboard.

  • I would down vote this but not just yet. try looking at sudo dmidecode which will tell you about the bios, and what it can handle. things like per channel ram limit, and detected hardware. try only running from the "undetected" stick of ram. perhaps you have some bad ram? or a problem with the Chanel, or the slot?

  • ? - no, but what if BIOS is set to DDR 3 and then DDR4 comes up ? or DDR 5 comes up - with a new name of the producer of RAM ? - it is not inmediately a matter of bad RAM - can be too, that RAM is not set into slot quite properly because of the contacts there - so plug it off and in again ? - hardware is only downwards compatible but never upwards compatible !
